I am a graduate with a languages/humanities degree in Classics from the University of Oxford. This included the study of languages, literature, history and linguistics. I am also a qualified English language teacher, and a tutor of various other languages, with over 10 years' experience. I love to broaden my knowledge of history and literature, in particular that of the ancient world, and enjoy sharing this with others.
I have learnt French, Italian, and Spanish to fluency, as well as Latin and Ancient Greek to degree level, so I know the difficulties, frustrations and joys of learning a language! I have an excellent knowledge of grammar and nuance of language.
I have taught and am available to teach English, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin and Ancient Greek, both in person and online - I have an account on First Tutors Languages where there is more information. I am also available to give lessons and help in Classical Civilisation and Ancient History, as well as English Language and English Literature.
I am happy to take on students for regular sessions over a period of time. I am also available for sessions for a shorter period, to prepare in the run-up to exams.
I have taught various languages to both adults and children, in summer schools, in companies and at home, individually, in small groups and in larger classes. My pupils have been all levels, from beginners to advanced. I have also prepared pupils for Cambridge and Trinity exams.
I have experience in helping pupils prepare for GCSE and A-Levels in English Literature, French, Spanish, Italian and Latin. I have also taught Classical Civilisation to children and adults and helped them prepare for exams.
I tailor my lessons to suit you, the learner - whatever your goal or focus. It is my aim to help you, as the student, achieve your goals and more than you thought possible. I appreciate that choosing the right tutor is a difficult process and decision, so you might want to have a look at testimonials from my students below.
When teaching Classical Civilisation and Ancient History, I think it is important to approach topics thematically and with a view to gaining insight into daily life and what impact the text or event would have had on people in the ancient world; this means understanding the cause and effect of events. Additionally, I think it is essential to provide a solid mythological background, to ensure an understanding of context.
In modern language lessons, I generally concentrate on speaking and functional language, allowing the learner to communicate in day-to-day situations.
I try to make the lessons fun and interesting! I also believe that seeing the links between different languages can help make learning a new one easier, so I point out the similarities in any grammar or vocabulary which are useful and relevant to the student.
I provide a follow-up report after the lesson, detailing what has been covered and any vocabulary, grammar or academic points that came up in the lesson that the student might want to review.
