I have a Bachelor of Business degree in Accounting. I am also a qualified chartered management accountant (CGMA) and have over a decade of post-qualification experience. I achieved 5th place in the world for my Financial Accounting exam. I want to use my love of numbers to help others achieve great results. I am also a native Mandarin speaker. I am uniquely placed to tutor maths, English, accounting and Mandarin.

I am passionate about numbers and this has drawn me to my profession. By forming good relations with my students and explaining the required concepts clearly, I manage to keep them interested in the subject and increase their confidence. Having achieved top grades myself, I am able to guide my students to achieve exam success. My priority in tutoring is tailoring each of my lessons according to individual students, which is the key aspect of one-to-one tutoring.

In my free time, I like food, yoga and opera. My favorite cuisine is Japanese and my favorite opera is Tosca.

Tutoring Experience

I have been tutoring since 2011, teaching Math, English, Accounting and Mandarin. My patience and calm demeanor helped my students to overcome anxiety and lack of confidence to achieve their best potential.
I have a lot of experience teaching math up to A Level. I've not only taught students to understand the subject matters but also valuable exam techniques to tackle difficult exam questions.

Tutoring Approach

What sets me apart from other tutors is how I tailor each student's needs uniquely. I achieve an acute understanding of my students' abilities by meticulously recording their progress and identifying weaknesses and improvement points. I also conduct regular progress reviews and share updates with parents so they understand where their children are towards their learning goals.
Each student will have an initial assessment to identify weak areas. A plan will then be made to meet the target achievement date. I will constantly review the plan to ensure it is still realistic and adjust if necessary.
The benefit of 1 to 1 teaching is that I can adapt the lesson content to what the student needs the most, so we save valuable time and achieve the most result. For any topics that I think the student already has the knowledge but need practice, I will set homework and continuously monitor result so they do not become problem areas. This approach will allow me to cover other topics in the lesson that the students are struggling with. The goal is to achieve the best exam result efficiently. I only choose the practices to do in the lesson that increase the students' chance to earn extra marks in the exam. In the lesson, I will:

  • Make the subject interesting and build confidence in math
  • Be sensitive and understanding towards each student's specific needs
  • Figure out what the child is interested in and then tailor the lesson accordingly

Below are a few tips for those students who struggle with maths, find it frustrating, or freeze doing tests.

  • Make sure you use a rough column (on the right-hand side) or rough paper to write out what you are thinking, even if it is simple multiplication. The more you free your mind up from irrelevant information, the more "space" there is for your mind to solve the actual problem. Think of a shopping list, it is tempting to remember it all, but once you've put it on paper you can focus on other things
  • The use of white space on paper is worthy of a chapter in itself. But in summary: Use lots of paper and space to write. When your writing gets squashed into a corner or at the side of the page, it clutters the mind as well. So use plenty of space when writing.
  • Stuck at a problem for ages? Leave it, and come back to it on a fresh piece of paper later. Your subconscious is very powerful and may have solved (or partly solved) the problem while you were having your break.
