My name is Marat, and I am a London-based pianist, musicologist, critic and educator with over 20 years of experience. I offer excellent and in-depth tuition in piano, composition, music theory and music technology, tailored to all ages and skill levels. With extensive experience teaching both privately and in schools, as well as delivering lectures at universities, I am passionate about sharing my love for music and helping students reach their full potential.
My musical journey began at the Moscow Jurgenson Music School in Russia, where I started my piano and music theory lessons at the age of 7. After eight years of full-time study, I graduated with distinction. In 2015, I graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, specialising in classical and contemporary performance and music education. In 2020, I completed my master’s degree at Goldsmiths, further expanding my musical expertise.
Since 2012, I have been performing and premiering contemporary classical music, both as a soloist and with ensembles, at venues such as IKLECTIK, Arebyte Gallery, Sound Festival, Southbank Centre, Cheltenham Music Festival and Teatro Baltazar Dias in Madeira, Portugal. For a decade, I was part of the New Maker Ensemble, a group dedicated to exploring new music and performance art. In addition to performing, I regularly write album and concert reviews, as well as texts on music, and I have presented lectures at conferences and events like the Gnesin Contemporary Music Week and ZIL Culture Centre. I also host my own podcast about new music.
Tuition is available for both in-person and online classes. I welcome students of all ages and abilities, from age 4 to adult learners, whether they are beginners or advanced. Lessons are conducted from my flat in Surrey Quays, but I am also able to travel to students, with a travel fee added to the standard rates. I currently offer:
I have successfully prepared numerous students for their piano and theory ABRSM exams, both privately and at various music schools, with the majority achieving distinctions and merits. Many of my students have progressed to study music at higher educational institutions, and some have received music scholarships while under my tutelage.
My approach is rooted in the traditional Russian teaching methodology, which emphasises developing correct technique and delivering imaginative, vivid performances. I tailor my methods to meet the individual needs of each student, ensuring a focus on music theory, aural skills, solfège, improvisation, musical analysis, sight-reading and other essential disciplines. Each lesson is customised to the student's requirements, and I cover a wide range of musical genres to foster a well-rounded musical education.
