Private English and History Tutor in Bath

I am a fully qualified teacher having completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Education (English and maths to GCSE) at Bath Spa University in 2011. My first degree was in history and Hispanic studies from Birmingham University.

I have a full DBS disclosure with Bath Welcome Refugees and ReadEasy (2024) and have completed several safe-guarding and child protection courses.

I will email copies of my academic and teaching certificates and my DBS clearance on request.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught numeracy/ maths (KS1- KS3), English/ literacy/ ESOL and citizenship to individuals and groups over the past ten years, ESOL & numeracy at the Workers' Educational Association in Bristol and GCSE English at Wiltshire College. I have experience of supporting students with learning difficulties although I am not a specialist.

When teaching GCSE/ iGCSE history and English I have come to see the value of using a wide range of learning materials, written, aural and visual with the aim of engaging students and I will expect students to complete activities we begin in the session. Similarly, with ESOL learners and I do expect students to do plenty of reading and listening of English in their own time - otherwise they can expect to be nagged by me!

As well as tutoring private students in economics, history, government & politics and English, I taught maths, English and study skills to primary and secondary age pupils at a supplementary school in east Bristol and have taught GCSE pupils attending Bath Tutorial College. Before the pandemic, I ran teaching sessions for refugees settling in Bath with the charity Bath Welcomes Refugees. I recently became a trustee and literacy specialist with the charity Read Easy. Over the past two years, I have been working for several schools in Wiltshire teaching secondary pupils who are not attending school full-time.

Tutoring Approach

To find out what each student wants and needs and proceed from there!

Please note that I normally ask for my travel expenses to be reimbursed and although I have a car, I prefer to use public transport where possible.
