Matt

I have studied and taught about social and political issues and their historical background for four decades. My work has entailed teaching and other work in a wide variety of environments with diverse demands, but always with the object of advancing our understanding of our own circumstances and helping students to develop and demonstrate their skills with confidence to seek their immediate and their longer-term goals.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught and led departments in three sixth form colleges, lectured at six universities, and examined at A level for AQA. Alongside this I have given private tuition and university application guidance throughout the UK and overseas, as well as writing for a dozen educational journals and broadcasting regularly with BBC TV and radio.

Tutoring Approach

All of the subjects I teach must take the form of analysis and argument based on evidence. The aim of study in these fields at the highest standard is to take our reactions to dilemmas and conundrums and test them using the evidence and approaches developed by others to see if we need to modify or can better present our own view. Though the immediate demands of study for approaching exams must be focussed and carefully tested, their consequences are wide, and the skills developed in studying them can be usefully transferred to many other contexts.
