I am an experienced secondary school teacher who likes to help students recognise the talents they have and support them in developing the skills they want to improve. I am a calm and friendly individual who can work with students at all levels. I am widely read, have a journalistic background and a Masters in Creative Writing so can help students develop a range of skills to make progress.

Tutoring Experience

For 12 years I have worked in large schools and taught English Language and English Literature at KS3 and KS4. I have taught English Language and Media Studies at KS5 and have broad knowledge of the curriculum. I have worked with students of different levels, can teach to a range of abilities and will tailor tuition sessions to suit the student's needs.
I have taught the AQA specification extensively and have good knowledge of Edexcel and OCR specifications. I have also worked with examining boards so have a firm understanding of the techniques students need to develop.

Tutoring Approach

I work with students to build their skills, help them recognise their talents and develop their confidence in this subject. I can help them revise texts, including plot, character and themes. I can also help them to improve their essay writing skills by focusing on planning, structure and cohesion.
My specialism is English Language A-Level so I have detailed understanding of the effect of language, this is particularly beneficial in helping students analyse and comment on a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
I strongly believe that students are learning for life and not only exams so I place value on the transferable skills that will help them in other subjects and beyond. I aim to improve their skills and confidence while fostering an appreciation of the skills they are developing.
