Megan

Hello! I'm Megan, a fully qualified English teacher working in central Exeter. My specialism is supporting students to cross key GCSE thresholds for Literature and Language, whether that is those aiming for a pass grade 4+ or those looking to secure the top grades of 7+. For younger students (11-14), I am able to flexibly support with literacy skills, gaps in learning due to absence, or moving beyond the curriculum. For A Level or B.A, I can support with academic writing, content coverage and exam technique.

Tutoring Experience

I am an experienced, dedicated teacher and am entering my third year as a successful Head of English. My own students' results are well above national average across the ability range. I take a keen interest in teaching developments at a national level, and lead on training new and experienced English teachers in my own school.

I am an experienced AQA examiner, which continues to provide me with valuable insight into the exam board's priorities. This knowledge is the foundation of my KS4 teaching approach which I then infuse with warmth, humour and passion for the subject. I believe it is entirely possible to 'teach to test' while also inspiring a love of English, especially for those who have found it challenging in the past.

Tutoring Approach

Working one-to-one with students is such a joyful experience as it allows me to personalise my approach to the needs of the learner. I seek to carefully unpick students' gaps and misconceptions so that work can be tailored to address areas with the greatest leverage. This can help speed up progress and avoid overwhelm, which is a common issue in English. Above all, I aim to support the development of independence so that by the time exams arrive, my help is entirely unnecessary! To this end, I will set manageable homework between sessions, completion of which is a condition of tutoring.
