My name is Megan, I recently finished a PhD in Physics at University of Birmingham.
I gained experience teaching during my PhD and enjoy helping students to improve their confidence and understanding. Over the last couple of years I've tutored many students in GCSE and A-Level Maths and Physics, helped them with topics they struggled with and built their confidence in the subjects.
When I was doing my A levels I didnt think I was good enough to do physics at university and thanks to a great teacher who built my confidence I was able to see that I was. I aim to build students confidence in their own ability and show them that they too can achieve.
During my PhD I taught undergraduate students in physics labs, I also supervised students in term long projects and was their main academic point of contact. For this a wide knowledge of physics and related skills was needed. The pandemic shifted the lab sessions online, I had to ensure the content was still clear and engaing while not in person as before. Throughout this teaching role at the university I had to mark students work and give detailed constructive feedback. I was always happy to chat with a student about their marks, areas that were great and things that needed improvement to help them achieve the marks they wanted.
Ive now been tutoring full time for 3 years and have helped may students build their confidence and improve their grades in maths and physics. I really enjoy seing students flourish and thie enjoyment of the subjects grow.
I'm a relaxed, friendly tutor and I am happy to adapt my teaching methods to the students needs. I have found that there are often multiple ways to approch a maths or physics problem and finding the way that makes sense for you can help with understanding the topic.
In one to one sessions with students I can provide extra help on a particular concept that is confusing or was missed due to absence. I can help with practice for exams; for this I find going over past examples the mark scheme and curriculum is beneficial and helped me to achive my grades when completing my exams. I can also provide longer term support throughout the school year to help build a students confidence. My physics teacher helped me gain confidence in my ability and I would love to be able to do the same for others.
