I am a poet, and am interested in all branches of the arts and humanities. I also enjoy playing piano, jazz trumpet, painting and sketching, and playing chess.

Tutoring Experience

My particular strength is in teaching English as a foreign language, which I have done since graduation both in language schools and as a personal tutor to students of all ages and abilities.

More recently, since returning to London, I have been teaching more English Language and Literature at school-age level, helping students to achieve the grades they want in exams at various levels.

Tutoring Approach

I am personally very interested in continuing my self-education, and spend a great deal of my free time learning -- about the arts, history, philosophy and languages in particular -- and I think this love of learning carries through into my teaching, where I try to create the same enthusiasm and interest in my pupils. I am particularly sympathetic to students who are uncomfortable about simply following rules and learning things for no apparently reason, and I try to encourage students to challenge assumptions, think for themselves, and generally see learning as a creative process rather than a passive one.

I feel that my personal experience of learning languages to various levels (French, Russian, German, and Spanish) has given me a particular insight into the difficulties facing a student, and helped me discover novel ways of dealing with them.
