I am a secondary school maths teacher currently teaching at Queen Elizabeth's School in Barnet since 2019. The school is very high achieving and attains some of the best GCSE and A Level results in the UK. I have also been providing maths tutoring, almost entirely online, to many tutees for several years. My other interests are mainly science, especially astrophysics, economics and history and I play tuba for several school bands and sometimes for a local orchestra. If you'd like more information then I have a website www.math-tutor.co.uk
I worked in the IT industry for many years but in 2016 I decided to change career and focus on my maths skills by becoming a maths teacher. I completed my PGCE year in 2017 while at Highlands School, Enfield and then moved to Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet in 2019. I started tutoring in 2017 and I have tutored several cohorts all the way through from Year 7 to Year 13
I believe in the direct instruction approach to teaching in which the teacher explains clearly how to carry out a particular maths technique using several worked examples followed by watching how the tutee performs similar tasks and guiding the tutee as they go along. I then advise the tutee about how to get more practice in independent private study up to the next tutorial. Once a maths technique becomes secure, I will explain some underlying principles behind those particular method(s). I do not make the initial explanation overly theoretical as, in my opinion, the tutee is not usually ready to grasp sometimes abstract concepts until they have developed sufficient practical skills in carrying out the method. During the tuition, I often reiterate several fundamental principles required to improve in maths, such as how to approach problem solving questions which usually give the higher marks in exams. Often these principles are not clearly revealed during regular school based lessons as time is often short. But I reveal them as soon as possible. This helps improve GCSE grades and is especially relevant for A Level, wheree there are more involved multi-step questions.
