I live just outside the City of Durham with my wife and children. I read voraciously, from fiction (key genres/styles are 19th century and sci-fi/fantasy) to history (particularly military) to poetry (favourites include T.S. Eliot, Les Murray, and Robert Browning). I love boardgaming, and follow the travails of Durham County Cricket Club closely.
I have successfully tutored several students up to a degree level, each achieving high results. Several of my students have had significant additional learning needs, or historically poor academic attainment, and have seen significant improvement due to our work together - e.g. from Fs to Bs at A Level. I have also taught regularly in the classroom in a university setting.
I follow a "Classical" approach, which seeks to be holistic - helping students engage with and enjoy their studies via personalised, non-rigid approaches, integrating various areas of learning and interest, whilst also achieving academic excellence. I seek to, particularly: (1) create a student-specific approach based on a student's strengths, weaknesses, and passions; and (2) connect different areas of the student's learning to reinforce other elements.
