Get ahead of the game! Tutoring is like the tortoise and the hare....starting asap and working steadily is the key, so
book me now!

So, lets start with the all important availability question!
In the week, I am available in the evenings online via Zoom, to support and teach maths.
I work with children from 7 years old to adults in their 30s or older!
On Saturdays, I am available online as in the week but also I can tutor 'in person', in the Penrith, Carlisle and Brampton areas of Cumbria.
My experience shows that tuition on Saturday is very worthwhile; without the day to day stress of the week, a lot more is absorbed.

I think that it is important to approach tutoring, remembering that one hour of tuition a week is more like the icing on the cake or the oil that eases the nut on the bolt; it isn't the cake itself or the nut and bolt. The teacher should be providing this.
So it's really important to find out who your child's teacher is and ask questions and find out what the teacher is like.
If it is not working with the teacher - perhaps there is a personality clash - then it might be better to consider more than one lesson a week.

And now a bit about me:
I am a very experienced qualified teacher: friendly and hardworking. I currently work as a supply teacher and tutor.
For the whole of the last academic year (23-24) I have taught Maths and RE in a secondary school in Lancaster and tutored Year 11 students at Foundation and Higher level.

I am keen to help those who have been told that they are useless at maths or have lost confidence in their ability to be able to do maths.
Maths doesn't need to be one of those subjects that is hated!

Please note that for legal reasons I am called by my first name, Colin, on this site.
However, since I was a baby I have been called by my second name, Peter, so I tend to answer to this!

Tutoring Experience

I have been a qualified teacher for 30 years and have 17 years of tutoring experience.
I have taught in a boys grammar, a mixed prep school, and four 11-18 secondary schools. (Maths to GCSE and Religious Studies to A Level, also SEN)
As a tutor, I have had lots of experience in preparing Year 11's for GCSE Maths and have helped many students to move from 3 to 4/5. Equally I have helped 'fine tune' those who are already on 6/7 to enable them to get the very highest grade. Often this involves identifying a weak area.

I also have experience of iGCSEs and home-schooling.

I have been though the Public school system, but having taught in large comprehensives have experience across the board.

Tutoring Approach

A relaxed approach - but this does not mean I expect the tutee to do little! On the contrary one hour's tuition requires concentration and effort, but even maths can be fun!
Normally we start from where the tutee is stuck and go from there, but I am adaptable, for example I am happy to suggest a 'plan of action'.

Please note that I work with a 24hr notice period which is pretty much standard practice.
