I’m a 39-year-old male Teacher who absolutely loves his subject, learning about pedagogy and cognition. I am passionate about my main subject specialism of English and have taught all related courses at GCSE and A-Level with great success. I’m a dedicated professional, family man and a musician who plays guitar in my school’s touring concert band.
I am a Lead Practitioner for disciplinary literacy across my current school. Within the last two years, I have successfully introduced the Voice 21 oracy framework and facilitated CPD for colleagues. I have also provided CPD for, implemented and continue to evaluate disciplinary writing pedagogy across the curriculum using evidence informed strategies from ‘The Writing Revolution’. I also coach and mentor trainee teachers, ECTs and qualified colleagues for Teaching and Learning. Presently, I’m working with Curriculum Leaders to develop co-planning of knowledge-based curricula with their teams.
As a former Curriculum Leader working within the same school, I introduced a knowledge-based curriculum to English and have seen the impact of significantly improved results recently. Everything I work on whole school is driven by my core belief that, in education, a teacher’s personal passion and sense of accountability for the quality of their practice is paramount. I love teaching and learning about the learning process.
In regard to my teaching, I introduced and taught A-Level English Language in the last two years. The first cohort, which sat examinations in June 2024, performed beyond expectations resulting in some A and A* grades. The average grade was a B and the cohort was mixed ability.
I have also taught A-Level English Literature with my students finishing with excellent outcomes. I've also taught A-Level English Language and Literature (combined course) with similarly positive results.
One of the areas which always yields outstanding results for my A-Level classes is with the Non-Examined Assessment (i.e. the coursework) where my outcomes are consistently above national average with excellent moderator feedback.
I also teach GCSE English Language and Literature courses and have done since I qualified. I've also examined every English qualification at GCSE and A-Level working for a combination of exam boards including AQA, WJEC and CIE.
I have very high expectations and continue to develop knowledge of my subject as well as keeping up to date with the latest research and evidence of effective pedagogy. My passion for these areas have led to improved outcomes in my school and a very stable and competent English department.
I have the respect of my students and colleagues. I feel that at this stage in my career, I have the credibility to be a successful private tutor and wish to share, not just my knowledge of the English subject, but proven methods for successful learning and revision.
As a Lead Practitioner, my responsibility is to remain at the cutting edge of knowledge in regard to evidence informed practice. I utilise the best strategies from the leading experts and utilise the recommendations from the Education Endowment Foundation - strategies which are proven to have impact and my actual in school results demonstrate their effectiveness.
