Private English and History Tuition in Islington

I am a recent graduate with a BA in English Literature from Oxford University. With over 5 years of private tutoring experience, alongside work as a general teaching assistant and 1:1 Support Staff in a Primary School, I can confidently adapt my teaching style to meet individual student needs, building confidence and supporting academic success. I am passionate about helping others achieve their full potential and I’m eager to bring my patience, empathy, and clear communication skills to a tutoring role. I am hardworking, patient, but above all, I love literature and want to inspire others to feel similarly about their learning.

Tutoring Experience

I started tutoring whilst doing my A-Levels and continued doing so throughout my time at University. I have experience teaching English Literature for students at KS3 through to GCSE and A-Levels, and I have also led tutorials focused on study skills, revision techniques and examinations for all ages. I understand the importance of learning good revision techniques, especially as this can be passed over by schools; however, good technique is the key to taking exams, and something I have lots of experience in!

I have worked in a Primary School as a General Teaching Assistant and 1:1 Support Staff, assisting the teacher in delivering lessons and providing focused support to students in the classroom. I ran small intervention groups, strengthening the student's writing and reading skills, and I am a confident, clear and empathetic communicator. In my work as a 1:1 Support Staff, I supported a neurodiverse child to improve his social integration and learning. I therefore have experience with neuro-divergent approaches to learning, and I can confidently assist students by adapting our learning methods, and using empathy and patience to ensure there is always a constructive and safe working environment.

Tutoring Approach

I am kind and patient, creating a positive and safe space in lessons so that we can enjoy learning together. I am deeply passionate about the subjects I teach, and I think it is important to try and extend this passion to younger students. There is so much to find interesting in literature if it's taught with curiosity and engagement, and I enjoy being able to work in a focused and dedicated manner in tutorials. I am reliable and punctual, and I will work hard to make every lesson interesting and productive for my students. I think it is possible - and important - to reframe questions or texts so that it resonates better with the student. When you find an angle that speaks to the interests and personality of the individual, it is incredible to see a student rethink their learning, finding interest in literature they had previously dismissed as boring or irrelevent.
