Rupert

I'm a highly-qualified, experienced tutor who's been working in the field for 12+ years. I'm absolutely committed to all my students for the duration of out time spent working together - whether that's over years or for just a few weeks. I'm also a publisher, writer and editor and run a joint venture teaching business with colleagues in Chengdu, China. Tutees I've taught have gained entrance to Oxford, Cambridge, other Russell Group universities, Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Alleyn's, Wycombe Abbey, St. Paul's Girls, Sevenoaks, Bute and many others.

Back in 2005, I went to Harrow School, going on to read English at the University of Cambridge (Emmanuel College), attaining my MA in 2013. While there I worked on several papers and magazines and also played hockey.

After graduating, I received a scholarship to spend some time at Jiao Tong University in Shanghai.

In 2015 I launched RemovedPublishing (www.theshortstory.co.uk) a leading website and publisher for short fiction and also run the Cambridge Prize. I was Associate Editor at The Word Factory and a was committee member for the Society of Young Publishers (London branch) 2019 & 2020. My debut novel is due to be published by Fig Tree in spring 2025.

Hobbies include skiing, chess, sketching, theatre. I travel widely and believe in bringing a wide range of experiences to my work, as well as sensitivity to different culture and people. These are values I carry forward in my work and encourage in everyone I teach.

I'm a full time tutor and the majority of my clients are long-term (in some cases 5+ years) and most come through personal recommendations.

I'm currently accepting a few bookings for both online and face-to-face work, but please note that with the run up to national GCSEs and Al-Levels I do have limited availability.

Tutoring Experience

Teaching Experience:

I've tutored a wide range if subjects both face-to-face and online. I specialise in English language and literature (from primary up to university level), entrance exams (7+, 11+, grammar school, private school, and Oxbridge) and Creative Writing. I am particularly interested in teaching through independent writing and fiction writing.

Many of my clients arrive via word of mouth and many are long term (3+ years). I don't work through agencies (and would recommend avoiding these) and am fully independent - as such there is no 'middleman' to deal with. I work with clients on a professional one-to-one basis that is straightforward and successful.

References, DBS checks, qualifications can all be provided, as requested.

Over the years, I have joined families abroad and have attended various retreats and vacations with clients. Much of my work has been with the HNWs and UHNWs and I am perfectly comfortable in any situation and any company, understanding the need for discretion. (I am happy to sign NDAs when needed and have done so in the past.)

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring is simple: professional, but personal.

To ensure this, I set long term goals and short term goals, after initial assessments of the tutee's competency in the first session.

The long term goals centre around the needs of the client, whether that's to get an offer from a top university, pass an exam, get an A*, or simply learn about a subject.

The short term goals focus on each individual session, tailored to the client so that he or she ends the day feeling more confident, inspired, and knowledgeable.

Being professional, personal, and achieving these goals all depends upon an ability to communicate effectively with the tutee; as someone who works with people and words on a daily basis, I fully appreciate the necessity of clarity, as well as good organisation.

I bring a wealth of experience and materials with me and work hard to push students to achieve their potential. I expect students to work equally hard so that the most can be made from the one or two hours available. The sessions are intensive, but always rewarding. The work is academic, but in all I do, I aim to inspire and encourage creative and critical thinking.
