Private Maths and English Tutor in Burton-on-Trent

I have a passion for maths and English literature. I enjoy solving maths problems and I love a good book and helping others improve their English skills. I also love other subjects but do not tutor them, but like the sciences, music and current affairs. I especially enjoy working one to one with students and watching them becoming more confident in their studies, filling in gaps in their knowledge and seeing them complete coursework and pass their final exams. It makes my day to hear success stories from students with exam results and their continuing success in life.

Tutoring Experience

I have been in education since the 2000's, working in various establishments teaching maths, English, Horticulture, life skills classes, catch-up classes for parents with children in school, GCSE's, vocational courses and school education. I have striven to continue my own personal education, in keeping with what is needed to tutor English and maths at GCSE level and A Level for English.

Tutoring Approach

I tend to go through a topic, then help a student complete questions or set tasks, as I find 'doing' something cements the information into the long term memory, better than just talking and showing. For example: actively working together on say an algebra question, helps the student discuss why they have to use an equation, how to apply it and actively solve it. I also work on exam techniques and how to read and understand a maths problem. With English, we look at punctuation, setting out writing, reading texts, breaking down difficult literature such as set Shakespeare texts and poetry. I use shared documents that a student can access in non lesson time, if they wish to continue studies after the lesson.
