Upon completing my bachelors in science, I began working for a pharmaceutical company as a microbiologist. The time I spent there allowed me to apply the knowledge I had acquired at university and further hone my skills in a complex and competitive industry. I worked in state of the art facilities around the country and was able to collaborate with experts in microbiology, pharmaceutical production and research. All of this has equipped me with the life experience of working in the industry that I teach students about. All of this gives context to the material I teach and allows students to hone their skills to ensure lasting progress.
I am currently teaching at a secondary school in central London. I am the head of science and am responsible for general progress of all year groups.
In my previous role as a microbiologist, I was responsible for the training and supervision of new graduates in the company. I would oversee their lab work, ensure that legally monitored paperwork was correct, and coach them in the creation of standard operating procedures and the methods of testing pharmaceutical drugs. All of this work was monitored closely by my superiors and subject to inspection by the Home Office. This rewarding experience taught me to work on a one to one basis and relay complex and difficult instructions. It certainly helped me to develop patience and taught me to have a great sense of accountability for those under my care.
I believe that the best progress is made when both the teacher and student have a strong professional bond based on trust and honesty. The student is responsible for hard work and openness about their doubts and weaknesses and the teacher is responsible for adapting to the needs of the students and ensuring that progress is sustainable and lasting.
I have a deep love for science and a logical approach to problem solving and all aspects of life, but I also believe that igniting a passion for a subject will greatly accelerate learning and make the experience that bit more enjoyable for student and teacher alike.
