Tutoring Experience

I am a qualified English secondary school teacher and taught a range of abilities across Key Stage 3 and 4. I have also taught Media and Film Studies at A-level. At my previous school, I was joint Head of Key Stage 3 and also mentored newly qualified teachers.

Alongside my teaching role, I taught after-school revision classes to help students coming up to their exams. I also delivered one-to-one key skills sessions for a student who was about to embark on their GCSEs, focusing on reading and writing skills.

As a private tutor, I have experience across all major exam boards. I have tutored Key Stage 4 students, some who have started in Year 9, taking them through to their exams. My students have all felt their sessions to be invaluable, particularly with the instant feedback they receive on their work. Some students have started working with me for the secondary school transition, and I have tutored them through to the end of their GCSEs.

What I can offer:
- I am able to tutor Key Stage 3 and 4 students, and can accommodate both short and long term work.
- I can cater for permanently home-schooled students and have prepared candidates for taking their GCSE English Literature and Language exams, fully independent of school input. This has involved delivering the entire curriculum for both papers and, with regular sessions, was able to ensure students have reached their potential.
- I also have experience of preparing students for private entry exams; a recent student scored very highly in the Bishop Wordsworth school test.
- I have offered a number of day time intervention sessions for students that cannot attend mainstream school, both short and long term.
- I am able to work with resit students who, whilst attending college, require further support to gain the required pass for their GCSE English Language or Literature.

Tutoring Approach

I am passionate about my subject and believe one-to-one tuition enables students to fully unlock their potential. Whilst they may not receive the time they need in the classroom environment, one-to-one sessions offer personalised learning to meet the specific needs of the student. Tailoring sessions in a relaxed and friendly environment is key to maximising a student's potential.

I have a dedicated tutoring room at my home and offer can offer 1 hour sessions. Days and times to be agreed in advance, I consider myself to be flexible towards the needs of the student and parent.

My students and their parents have always given me the most positive feedback and I encourage an open relationship to ensure my students are receiving the exact support that they require. A recent review from a student I finished tutoring says: "Sarah has been an amazing mentor all throughout the 2 years I have had her. She started off by helping me structure my PEE/ PEAL paragraphs. This not only helped in English, but the analytical skills were transferred into other subjects, such as : R.S , History and geography. She also was great at teaching me how to adjust my sentences, so they would be clear. I'm just beginning to describe some of the little things she did, if I included all the practice questions and analysis, I could continue all day. In summary, she helped me get from what would have been a grade 5 student after GCSE to a level 8. So I recommend to any student, that they use Sarah as their tutor, as it is beneficial for progress in academics."

Other testimonials:
"You not only teached [my son] the necessary subject, but you gave him the confidence that he could make it. Thanks again for your support and methodology, which not only reflected on English but all subjects."

"Sarah is a great tutor and has been very good with my daughter. My daughter has grown in confidence in English and has done well this year as a result of Sarah's teaching. Thank you Sarah."

"We're very thrilled Sarah. Thanks SO much and absolutely couldn't have done it without you."

"[My son] got the results he needed. This was totally because of the teaching he had from you so thank you very much! It really helped with his understanding of structuring an essay and what to include!"

"...a huge thank you for everything you have done for [my son] this year. The change in him, when it comes to English, has been dramatic, to say the least. We've seen his confidence grow over the months [...] he admitted to me [...] that your sessions have made him so much better in English, and he's happy we found you."

"best tutor ever!"

With patience and time, I believe a student can achieve what they desire.
