I now tutor online using Zoom and sharing resources via email. I have over 25 years' experience of teaching English at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, awarded an outstanding Ofsted inspection in 2016. For many years I have achieved excellent exam results in teaching GSCE English Language and Literature; recently I have taught the new GCSE and it has been an insight working as an AQA examiner for this specification. Also, I have considerable experience of teaching Key Stage 3, A Level Language and Literature and have prepared students for Grammar School entrance examinations (verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics). Furthermore, I have experience of teaching students with special needs as well as gifted and talented students.
Having achieved a 2:1 degree in English and a PGCE in teaching English from 11 - 18, I have worked with young people in a caring and teaching capacity for many years and I would say that challenge, creativity and the individual's learning needs are at the heart of my practice. I live in the Pendle area with my family and enjoy running, gardening, Literature and the Arts.
I have taught English at secondary level across the age range (11-18) for many years, developing a wealth of resources and subject knowledge. My knowledge of GCSE English Language and Literature is considerable, including the new GCSE, and I also work as an examiner for this specification. Similarly, I have a vast experience of teaching A Level English Literature and Language. Furthermore, I have enjoyed developing techniques and skills to ensure achievement at Key Stage 3. Also, I have tutored primary school students in preparation for SATs and entrance examinations (Verbal Reasoning, English and Maths).
As every student is different it is vital that you adapt your approach and materials to maximise learning. I tend to be a creative thinker and use this skill to encourage engagement and progress; also participation and a variety of activities is at the centre of my approach. Furthermore, I think it is so important that the learning experience is fun, engaging and challenging coupled with a positive, supportive relationship between teacher and student.
