Hello! My name is Sian, I'm 33, and I'm based in Bristol.
I'm a graduate of the University of Durham (BA Modern Languages, Spanish & Russian) and the Guildford School of Acting (MA Acting). As you can probably guess, I am incredibly passionate about literature, languages and foreign culture. I also adore Shakespeare and relish the challenge of helping students tackle his text.
I have toured schools up and down the country as a workshop facilitator with companies such as the Young Shakespeare Company and West End in Schools. This has provided me with a key insight into the education system and the need for people to treated as individuals and for their unique needs to be met, rather than being forced through an education 'machine'. This is where the power of private tutoring can really shine!
As part of my undergraduate degree I worked as an English Language teacher in a secondary school in Northern Spain, where I taught children of all ages and abilities. I then sought out opportunities to give private lessons, which lead to tutoring both very young children and adults alike. I experienced teaching with a full spectrum of ages and abilities, and was able to hone my skills accordingly.
Since then, I have worked as a freelance tutor in the UK across four main subject areas: English (as a foreign language), English Literature, Drama & Theatre Studies, and Spanish.
I have plenty of experience both teaching remotely and face-to-face, so I am always happy to defer to the student's preferred environment.
My teaching style has been described as accessible, informal, and highly effective.
I believe that it is vital for students to feel at ease, to trust their tutor, and to build confidence in themselves. If learning is something a student dreads, their chances of improving remain slim. This rings true for children and adults alike.
My primary aim is always to help my students embrace a joy of learning and to find a confidence in their ability so that the learning can being to flow.
