I am a friendly and approachable tutor, with loads of experience, and with a track record of excellent academic outcomes for my students. I have been teaching Science since 1997, I have been Head of Physics in 2 schools since 2000, and from 2005 have been Head of Physics and joint Head of Science in a popular and successful Grammar School. I enjoy exploring the way in which students learn as well as having a passion for Physics, and have been a leader of innovative strategies wherever I have taught, such as bringing in CREST awards and a hugely popular Science Fair to my current school, all of which allow a broad and deeper appreciation of where STEM subjects can take a person. For relaxation I play guitar and enjoy cycling and traveling to experience different cultures (when I can!).
I have a wealth of experience in teaching OCR A level, IB and AQA GCSE Physics and Trilogy courses, having over 20 years in delivery of these. I have run revision courses during holidays as well as personal one to one tutorial sessions. As a subject leader I have an in depth understanding of where a student is in terms of their learning, and how best to support them to achieve their potential.
I have a friendly, supportive yet rigorous approach, using an initial 'diagnostic' session to find out at what level a student is in their course, whether A level, IB or GCSE, and then building a rapport with the student to help them develop their understanding of Physics. This may take the form of building confidence in exam technique, articulating ideas verbally or using visual aids, and then strategies for long term learning of key concepts. I use a variety of resources; exam papers and mark schemes, PPT presentations and animations, as well as presenting in person, using a whiteboard and delivering short sessions as a student would have in a classroom. Students I have taught have always said they have confidence in my teaching, enjoy the way I deliver the lessons ( mixture of rigour and humour) and have excellent outcomes.
