Since starting lessons with Sophie in September, Mariam has made remarkable progress in English, particularly in her confidence and understanding of English Literature. Before working with Sophie, Mariam was struggling and beginning to lose interest in English, especially with complex areas like character analysis in literature. However, Sophie has transformed Mariam’s experience.

Sophie’s patient approach has made challenging concepts more accessible, allowing Mariam to truly connect with the material. She’s currently working on An Inspector Calls, and Sophie’s support has helped Mariam grasp each character and their motivations, something she previously found daunting. With Sophie, she feels more equipped to contribute to classroom discussions, eager to showcase her newfound understanding. It’s heartening to see her excited about English and motivated to engage at school again.

What stands out most is Sophie’s ability to build a warm, encouraging environment where Mariam feels supported beyond just academics. Sophie has allowed room for Mariam to express herself, creating a balance between structured learning and open dialogue. This approach has not only helped Mariam’s academic skills but has also positively influenced her social confidence, which has been invaluable.

I am incredibly happy with Sophie’s work and trust her completely in guiding Mariam. Sophie teaches four students of various ages for me, helping with subjects ranging from 13+, GCSE revision, academic essay competitions and personal statements for university applications. She seriously improves ‘my kids’ abilities in their subjects, who are also not native speakers. She is always very well-prepared for the lessons, which shows how much she cares.

She also really improves their confidence and opens up their eyes far beyond the lesson, which I feel is really important, especially for the teenagers. Her lesson reports are the best ones I receive, comprehensively showing what the child has done in the lesson, where they are doing well or where they need more attention.

Sophie was an incredible find! Just weeks before GCSEs, Sophie agreed to take my son on for private tuition. Challenged with ADHD, keeping my son on task, focused and engaged is a tall order. However, Sophie more than rose to the occasion. Even just after their initial assessment session, my son requested more sessions with her.

Sophie's assessment was very thorough- and she spoke with me straight away afterwards about what the focus should be in the run up to the exam. Her manner was the perfect degree of enthusiastic- not too much to "turn off" a 15 year old boy, but rather, the right amount the best out of him- a hard balance to strike! I witnessed an immediate improvement in his work even after the first session. Then, after a couple of sessions, my son's confidence began to grow in his writing and he became motivated to produce his best work. Her approach, always targeted to maximise the time they had together, was just what he needed; and as a result, he trusted and listened to her. Sophie was key in taking the stress away of the exam season. Probably the best testimony to her teaching is that my son is now considering doing English for his A Levels!

Sophie is a highly qualified and experienced tutor who has a deep passion for English literature.
