Stefan is a passionate maths tutor who wants his students to believe in their abilities and achieve their goals.
In 2018 Stefan retired from a successful twenty-year career as a risk management specialist, where he helped clients all around the world implement complex financial risk management systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland, USA.
Stefan started offering Maths tuition in 2019 as a response to the increasing need to access quality tuition services. Since then he has been helping students at various levels find their talent for maths and succeed in their ambitions. During the Covid pandemic, the services were successfully expanded to run online and most programmes are now delivered remotely. Fees indicated are for online tuition.
In his spare time, Stefan volunteers for Action Tutoring, an education charity which supports students in attaining a meaningful level of academic achievement through one-to-one tuition.
Stefan is fluent in both English and German.
I have tutored both Maths and Computer Science for several years during my studies in Germany and the US. During my career as a risk management specialist, I was involved in product training for our client base, and am well versed to explain complex topics to technical and non-technical audiences.
I currently am a volunteer tutor for Action Tutoring offering Maths tutoring at various schools in South London. Action Tutoring is an Educational Charity, which offers support to pupils to gain a meaningful level of academic achievement in Maths and English and make them feel more confident in their own abilities. Since the 2019 summer term I have taught maths in various schools, typically year 10 or 11 pupils. The programs consist of weekly sessions, tutoring groups of up to three pupils. It has been a real pleasure to see these pupils' confidence and ability increase over the course of the term.
One to one tuition can be transformative in the life chances of a young person. I aim to bring Maths to life and make the subject less abstract by applying it to real-life problems. Students are more likely to engage and above all have fun when they can apply Maths in a vocational rather than academic context. Often students treat maths as a series of rules. However, I believe it is crucial that every student understands how Maths can be derived from very basic principles, and how various mathematical concepts are interconnected.
I also put a strong emphasis on solution techniques, which includes clear and concise writing - reducing the tendency of many students to "guess" the answer to the problem. Instead, the focus is on taking concise steps in working out the solution.
My teaching approach will be customised to the student's objectives and current understanding of various topics. Initially, I will provide an assessment of the student's current understanding and gaps. As a typical weekly routine, I would suggest an initial review of a specific topic followed by a number of problems that the student will attempt to solve under my direction. After the session, I will provide a short written summary of the main Maths techniques discussed, as well as homework to be completed for review by me in the following session.
I aim to be firm in pushing each student to be able to perform to their best but at the same time make it as fun as possible. Tutoring should not be an intimidating experience, but contrast with and complement the classroom experience. The end result should be for the student to feel confident in their own ability and have the tools to succeed in the classroom or in an exam setting.
