English as a second language? Needs a bit more time? Maybe your child is dyslexic, autistic or has attention problems. If your youngster struggles with English, or just needs a little more confidence, I can help with spelling, reading and writing.
Positive and patient, I'm an experienced, highly qualified English and dyslexia tutor. I hold Master's qualifications in dyslexia and Autism/Asperger Syndrome and have parental experience of these and ADHD. I enjoy providing the conditions for enjoyment and productivity needed by each child.

Tutoring Experience

I have tutored English since 2009. I taught KS3 and GCSE English in schools for nine years. I have also taught in primary schools. I home educated my children for several years. I can travel to you and teach your child in your home. You may like to know that I live in south west Birmingham and not Halesowen, as First Tutors write.

Tutoring Approach

We play games! The best lessons are the ones that make learning easy. I introduce topics in carefully chosen steps, so that the child experiences a high success rate. I love building confidence and teaching skills by making sure children have a great time!

If your child is getting to grips with spelling, reading, handwriting, or simply learning to speak English, I am here to give consistent and dedicated help. Patient one to one attention with a subject specialist can help a young learner to grow in ability and confidence. The bank of resources I have to hand is especially helpful in allowing me to respond flexibly.

Lessons are carefully structured and, for dyslexic learners, contain sequencing work, memory games, practice of the spelling pattern, reading, handwriting and review. Multisensory learning, where the channels of hearing, seeing, feeling and saying are used together, is effective and maintains the student's interest. I have a mixture of ready made and home made card games and often base the theme on the child's interests. For dyslexia or fundamental literacy lessons, two things result in faster progress: a five minute daily homework and multiple lessons per week.

Autistic children need an understanding approach. I have worked successfully with the keen and the not-so-keen; reluctant writers; children with Pathological Demand Avoidance, sensory processing disorder and ADHD/ADD. My own children are autistic and have ADD/ADHD and one is dyslexic. I have also worked successfully with children with speech, language and communication needs.

For children learning to speak English, I use a bespoke approach, basing most of the lesson on games, concentrating on English grammar and vocabulary. Support is also given to parents when requested.

Children as young as three years old have enjoyed my lessons, as have GCSE resit students and adults. I only ask that your child is developmentally ready to interact with a tutor.

Charges are incurred for lessons cancelled without notice.
