Hello, I am 60 years old ex-graduate of Imperial College and living with my family in Bracknell. I used to work in a FE College for many years, but I took voluntary redundancy, and I am now working as a tutor. I have tutored many students in the past, and at present I am tutoring a number of students in both maths and physics. Should students be attending college I am available for daytime sessions.
I was a physics lecturer in a Further Education college for 32 years, with the last 17 years mainly as a mixed manager/teacher. During that time I mainly taught A level physics, but also taught BTEC Level 3 Science, GCSE Maths and A Level Maths. I started moving into management at the college in 2000 and progressed through Head of Science up to being an Associate Director for Curriculum, which basically meant managing all A level and science programmes, with management of college site responsibilities. I took voluntary redundancy from this post, and I am moving into semi-retirement through tutoring, which I have done very successfully for the past six years.
I am a very experienced teacher and I feel that I balance encouragement with challenge very well when tutoring. My present students seem very happy with my style, and they all expect to be pushed to think through problems and to be given homework. I only need to work part-time, so I will be able to prepare sessions well and mark work that is not covered in the session. In initial conversations and at the first session I will find out your aims and present understanding of the subject, and identify strengths and weaknesses. We will then address the weaknesses through my teaching and questioning of the student to check for learning, followed by example questions for the student to work through. I will guide the student as they answer questions, but I will expect them to have pushed themselves to solve problems before stepping in with assistance. I recognise that many students do not achieve their full potential through a lack of confidence, so I will give plenty of encouragement and praise during the sessions.
When working online, via Zoom, students join me in my virtual room with an online notebook and share screens to which I post questions and then we work through them together, making notes on screen
