Online English and English (Foreign Language) Tuition

I am passionate about English, the language and the literature. Many young people have a preference for either the arts or the sciences but to make any progress in life we need a good grounding in both maths and English. Without Grade 4 (C) or above in these two subjects, you can be excluded from many jobs.

There has to be a rapport between a student and tutor and for this reason I offer the first hour free. This is to see if we match, to identify where the student is now and to plan how he or she may progress. If I do not feel I can work with a student I will say so. I will provide regular progress updates and honest evaluations.

Tutoring Experience

I have been teaching for around 18 years and have taught a wide range of students of all ages in English language and literature, both in an employed position and as a freelance tutor.

Recent student results:
2023 results: R - I did not expect to pass - but a 4 for lit and a 6 for lang. H - two 7s. A - two 7s. S - two 8s, E - a 6 and a 7.

Past results:
Student J: came to me with mock grades E in both language and literature in January 2017. He has just received a B in Language and a C in Literature in the first of the new GCSE exams in 2017.
Student H: came to me one month before the GCSE with a predicted C in both Language and Literature. His results were 2 As.

I call that - good results!!!

Tutoring Approach

I make it clear that a student will need to make an effort - I cannot take the exam for them. But I am friendly and relaxed in teaching using as much humour and real life comparisons as possible. Even if I hate a book or poem, I can appreciate the way it is written and the beautiful language used. Students seem to relate to that.

Confidence is something often lacking in young people, I work with them to help them appreciate just how good they can be and raise their confidence in their ability.
