Hi, I'm Taran and I'm 23 years old. I am a graduate from Keele University with a 2:1 in Bsc Maths and Philosophy. I think that mathematics is a very important subject, especially at GCSE level. I find maths teaching enjoyable and engaging, helping a student solve problems by explaining them in a different way, showing them where their mistake is or by asking leading questions so that they are able to identify the correct method by themselves. As a strongly motivated and enthusiastic maths graduate, I hope to cultivate a love of mathematics that I have found to be lacking due to negative perceptions of maths as being ‘not for you’, from wider media as well as observations of student attitudes.
I have had a year of experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (Maths). My primary role was to run maths lessons for small groups of pupils; using both my own adapted resources as well as resources provided for me by the class teacher. I have also had half a year of experience on a teacher training course with Essex Schools Direct. I have now left this programme as I feel my skillset is more usefully applied to one on one tuition than classroom management. This has given me a detailed knowledge of the current KS3 and KS4 curriculum, with experience with both low achieving and high achieving pupils, as well as those with SEND needs.
My teaching approach will be learner focused: identifying the areas in which the student needs to make the most progress, and helping them move forward in their learning. I will achieve this through scaffolded resources, building up questions from simple to more complex, in order to clearly show the student why each step is necessary for the questions to be solved.
