Please note: After an accident in 2021, I have been left with limited mobility and for the foreseeable future am unable to travel. I can therefore only offer face-to-face tuition from my house or online. I have qualified teacher status and am registered with the government's teaching agency, having graduated with a Bachelor of Education over twenty years ago. I have extensive teaching experience within primary and secondary schools both at home and abroad. Because I have worked in Early Years and KS1 a great deal I have a lot of knowledge of phonics, including the different programs taught in schools, such as Jolly Phonics, Letters and Sounds and Read Write Inc. I am fully converse with the National Curriculum and have previously tutored up to GCSE level. In addition, as a supply teacher I have worked in secondary schools and have a thorough understanding of the needs of the young people I teach. I have worked extensively with children who have struggled at school for a number of reasons, including not speaking English as a primary language . Having qualified teacher status means that I have been trained specifically to teach children and young people although, since graduating, I have gone on to update my skills and am now qualified to teach functional skills (literacy and numeracy). Currently I work as a Supply Teacher in the North East of England and have regular posts in two different schools, I offer private tuition because it allows me to build on a job that I love and gives me greater flexibility. Please note I am currently unable to travel due to an ankle injury, so I am either teaching online or students come to me.
I have previouslyy worked within schools as a EYFS, KS1 and KS2 teacher and have also got 18 years experience as a Private Tutor. Currently I am working as a Supply teacher in the North East and have regular teaching posts. I have extensive knowledge of year 6 and year 2 SATS and do a lot of intervention work in mainstream schools with those children who are struggling. Additionally I have developed Functional Skills programmes for disaffected young people and have taught these on a one to one and group basis.
I have experience of tutoring up to A'Level Biology, my specialist subject, but also GCSE subjects, in particular maths and English.
Furthermore I work a great deal with children who struggle with reading and writing, including children with dyslexia - and have developed resources to assist these children in their learning.
Initially I like to assess students in order to determine their current levels of learning and areas requiring more focus. For older students I provide individually tailored programmes which meet with their particular needs. I will adapt my teaching style as appropriate so that my student benefits from different approaches. I provide resources and try to match what the students are learning at school, as this reinforces understanding.
With younger students I believe that they learn more when they are having fun, and so I have extensive resources such as educational games which encourage learning while making it enjoyable. I am also aware that children like rewards for good work, and so offer these.
I am of the opinion that homework reinforces learning, and so do set this after every lesson. However, I am also aware that some children receive a great deal of homework from their schools and this must come as a priority.
Overall, I prefer an informal approach, which helps those less confident students feel more at ease. A relaxed student is more likely to learn and understand what they are being taught.
