Latin and Greek (Ancient) Tutoring in Cambridge

I read Classics at Downing College, Cambridge, graduating with first-class honours. I trained as a teacher at Peterhouse, Cambridge, and now teach Classics at a top independent school in the UK. I have hundreds of hours' teaching and tutoring experience in Latin, Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation. I have tutored both languages to degree-level standard, having studied both at university, in addition to taking papers in prose composition, Hellenistic and Roman philosophy, ancient history from the archaic to the imperial period, classical reception studies, and philology and linguistics. I have a tremendous passion for the classics, and my aim is to share this with my pupils, and to try and incite a similar interest by making my lessons as engaging as possible.

Tutoring Experience

I have extensive experiencing teaching both Latin and Ancient Greek, including both language and literature, in addition to Classical Civilisation. I have taught for all major public examinations in all three subjects, including GCSE (OCR and Edexcel), and both AS and A Level. I have also provided guidance to pupils applying to Oxbridge, and tutored at undergraduate level, including a pupil at La Sapienza, widely considered one of the top universities in the world for Classics, who provided the following testimony: 'My Latin and Greek has improved significantly thanks to [William] and I have very much enjoyed our lessons.'

Tutoring Approach

Lessons are tailored to individual pupils, but with a central focus on building a strong command of the respective language, such that pupils are able to engage directly with and translate classical texts with confidence. This is particularly important for more experienced/high-level learners, for whom additional contextual knowledge about texts can also be provided. Grammar and vocabulary are central to the learning process, but, drawing on experience teaching using both deductive and inductive methods, the approach to learning can be adapted according to the learner. Tried and tested techniques such as spaced repetition will also be implemented to facilitate efficient learning and long-term retention. Lessons will be planned to build upon one another, but can always be adapted in real time to meet particular needs, including addressing any concerns which may arise and supporting pupils in completing schoolwork, where relevant. For those preparing for public examinations, we can work through carefully tailored practice exercises, translation passages, and past papers to identify and address any particular weaknesses and prepare pupils for success in line with individual specifications.
