I am a 1st year medical student at the University of Manchester who did A-Level AQA Biology, AQA Chemistry, AQA Maths, Edexcel Further Maths and an EPQ, achieving top grades. As a recent student, I not only have good knowledge of the current content being tested, but I also have a good understanding of mark schemes, such as where to get marks, how to time papers, and so on. However aside from that, I like to play tennis, play video games, and go out with my friends, so I am a normal person like you. Teaching has always meant something to me. The satisfaction of helping people get the grades that they need is unmatched, but alongside that, I want to just create a nice chill atmosphere to learn, not something crazy intense. A way for you to learn, stay engaged, and just have a chill time whilst taking away everything you need.
I have had different experiences in tutoring, both paid and unpaid.
I have tutored 11-plus children in Maths, English, and Verbal Reasoning which has given me the patience (from teaching children) that is often needed when teaching people new difficult concepts.
I have tutored GCSE Maths in the past, so I understand how to break down problems to people who may not want to have done the subject, but had to due to Maths being mandatory at GCSE. This improved my engagement skills and explanation skills, teaching them in ways specific to them.
I was involved in 2 mentoring programmes in college, chemistry and maths. Teaching this level of subject whilst also doing it myself was definitely a challenge, as I had to first understand the content myself before teaching it. However, with this, I can now understand new concepts and methods of learning/teaching quickly, improving my overall cognitive skills.
My teaching approach is any approach. I like to cater my teaching to my students, as that is really the best way for them to learn.
However, one approach that I have found useful is to understand what the student wants help with and is weak on, giving them freedom of learning and focusing on what is needed. Then we cover those things in the detail required, where I may test you along the way to test understanding. When I think that you are ready, we can go into some exam questions to really test your knowledge. Being a past student, I know the exam secrets and techniques, which I can pass on to you. It's not just the content, it's how you impress the examiner, which is a main goal of mine.
